Default Trouble Setting Up WEP key for SMC Wireless router
when enter the passphrase and click on generate button, only ******* appear in Key1-4 boxes. this did not happen with my LinkSys router so that I can easily know the exact password to enter on log on page. Anyone has any idea how to solve this.

What is the exact model of the router?

Why do you want to use WEP encryption - WPA-PSK is more secure. WEP can be cracked in under 15 minutes so unless you have to use then I wouldn't.
