Smile [Fixed] Inconsistent wireless network speed on laptop

Hi All,

I have a problem with a wireless network and cannot seem to determine what the solution is.
I have a home wireless network running 4 laptops. All different manufacturers and different configurations and different ages. Three of the laptops work fine across the network two bought 2006, the other 2007.

The 4th is causing me problems - also purchased 2006. The speed in the "wireless network connection" tab keeps varying from 54mbps and 1mbps - All the others work at a constant 54mbps.

Previously it was configured to work with ADSL and worked fine with consistent 54Mbps network speed.

Since Changing to DSL it has never achieved consistent speed of 54Mbps.

Rightly or Wrongly I have ruled out a router config error as the other laptops are working. Other externalties such as radio waves again as the other laptops are working fine.

I have turned off all firewall settings on the problem laptop and the but the error still occurs.

When I repair the wirless connection the speed goes back up to 54Mbps.Only After several minutes the speed drops back down to 1Mbps.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello and welcome to PC Help Forum.

The speed wil drop and speed up,why?Because moving the laptop around from the wireless router, how thick walls are in your home.
If the laptop is to close to router or to far away all this will drop a connection.
The more computers or laptops joined to the network will slow the speed down.Age is also a factor on the laptops. The stronger laptop will hog the connection.

Go to device manager and update network adaptors driver.
Open a web page and click on tools, scroll to internet options and delete cookies/history/temp files.

Re run network setup wizard on laptop.

Many thnaks - Will give it a try.

Regarding the wall thickness / distance from dsl router. I tried an experiment with three of the laptops (Wireless connected to network) on a table same distance from router same walls in between. Two Laptops had a constant 54Mbps, the problem laptop speed started at 54Mbps when first connected and then degraded to 1Mps.

Will give the update network adapters driver a go.

Many thanks.
