Default Issue when connecting to internet

I'm trying to get a computer connected to the internet, but I'm having a bit of a problem.
(btw, I'm doing this over the phone, so it's a bit more difficult than usual, but the person I'm dealing with is very cooperative and knows enough to be helpful)

The computer is running Windows Millennium Edition (yes.../thread, I know)
The DSL router is plugged directly into the computer via ethernet, and the computer's network adapter shows a steady link light and a constantly flashing activity light.
I can ping the loopback interface from the command prompt, but Windows IPCONFIG shows that there is no default gateway, which makes no sense....there is obviously nothing wrong with the connection between the two because the link and activity lights are both active (unless the DSL router is using a static IP address, which would be very odd).

I cannot (needless to say) access the internet or anything outside of the local connection because I have no gateway, and as I said, the DSL router is plugged directly into the computer's ethernet interface, so there are no other network resources I need to access.

Any suggestions?

Also, I've tried connecting it to the USB interface, but alas, it is running Windows ME...so no PnP.

Thanks,
-Kolby

UPDATE: When trying to ping the DSL Router, I get "Destination Host Unreachable" rather than "Request Timed Out" which is what I was expecting.

Does this help?

The model of the router would be helpful. Also the model of the modem if its not a modem router. Please post back with this info and we may be able to help you.

The ip address for the router should be 192.168.1.1 Have you tried assigning the PC's ip address manually to something like 192.168.1.2 and setting the default gateway and dns to 192.168.1.1

Once you have access to the router make sure dhcp is setup correctly or just disable it and leave the pc as it is.

Post back if this doesn't work.

Well like I said, when pinging the address 192.168.1.1 (the DSL router), I get a message saying "Destination host unreachable"...NOT "Request timed out"

I did, however check the IP address settings (and APIPA was enabled), but I changed to a static address of 192.168.1.2 and tried to ping the DSL router and received the same result. "Destination host unreachable" NOT "Request timed out". I also entered the router's IP as the default gateway, but as figured, this changed nothing since 192.168.*.* is a PRIVATE address, yet the computer still couldn't reach the host. I returned the settings to the way they were before.

tl;dr - I can't reach the DSL router from the computer and still have no access to the internet. Running Windows ME with a Westell 6100 router plugged directly into the computer's network interface (10/100 Ethernet). I CAN ping the NIC's loopback interface, but cannot reach any other address (local or otherwise). Computer's name is a 6-character alphanumeric name, workgroup is WORKGROUP.

NOTE: The computer successfully connected to the internet at another person's house using their DSL router, which further confirms my belief that the router itself (not the computer) is the suspect of the trouble here.

also, I forgot to mention that I tried resetting the router once (powering off, turning back on), but the symptoms remained. I have a feeling that this means that something in the router's settings are wrong, but I can't connect to the router to fix it. any suggestions?
