Smile [Fixed] Vista to XP Workgroups

XP Home SP2 - wired to router (named XPPC) with HP printer attached (named HPprint) and a shared folder called “shared”. All firewalls uninstalled & turned off.

Vista laptop - wireless to router (named VistaPC)

On both PC’s same user name, password, administrator status and workgroup name
XPPC can see all shared folders on VistaPC

On VistaPC turned off Norton Firewall but just in case put router’s IP address range & XPPC into Trusted Zone. Also Network Discovery, File & Print Sharing & Public Folder turned on

VistaPC can see XPPC but when trying to access it get message “Can’t access , no permission etc”

So in the Start Menu “Start Search” have typed in \\XPPC\shared and it finds it and I can map it and on reboot it finds it again!

BUT all I want to do is use the printer on the XPPC from VistaPC and I can’t get to it.

I hope the above is clear and has anybody any ideas of what must be the simple thing I’m missing

Try this http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-t...ows-vista.html

Sorry to but in,but is the workgroup named all the same as Vistas work group not XP?

How to set, view, change, or remove special permissions for files and folders in Windows XP

When you configure a custom location for the Windows Firewall log file in Windows Vista, information may not be written to the log file

Inherited permissions are not automatically updated when you move folders

Angry Re: [Answered]Vista to XP Workgroups

Somebody has pin "Answered" on this thread and it isn't!

To answer the last two items in this thread:

If I could see the printer on the VistaPC I would not be writing this - (but I can see the printer on XPPC under workgroups a a shared device)

So - the common workgroup is MSHOME,

I'd previously read & worked through all of "Jelly Bean"'s suggestions.

What is the correct address for the printer through "Start Seach" -

\\XPPC\??????????????????????????????????

Apologies for my frustration!

If you are following this guide: Windows XP: Sharing printers

..then it may be a permissions issue. Set the permissions on the printer share to "Everyone"
