Hi guys,

I have just had to do a fresh install on my neighbours laptop a compaq presario v5000 after one of his friends screwed it up. As he did not have the original software I have had to find all of the drivers on my machine (using hp website) I have downloaded all of the network drivers listed, and although it can recognise an internet connection (wan and lan) it will not actually connect to the internet. Is there something obvious I am missing?

It is running Windows XP professional if that helps.

Is it direct connect to broadband modem or through a wirless router?

it's direct connect. I have cable broadband, but the laptop can also detect wireless internet from my other neighbours.

have you simply tried switching off modem for 1 minute then on again?
have you tried to repair the connection via internet connections?
does the internat connections show the router etc?

It's not the connection, I use the same connection on this PC and it always works, i also make sure i turn the modem off before connecting to the laptop, also as i said the laptop can connect to neighbours wireless networks. I have tried repairing but it always hangs, i have a feeling it might be something to do with it trying to get the ip address. I have tried resetting the winsock before (that was a problem i had on another machine) amongst other things, but to no avail.

Yes and you need to set up an internet connection on laptop.Go to the laptops internet connections and set one up.your router or modem is not the problem.for to connect properly to a wirless network you need name and password.and the wirless network must have sharing enabled.

the internet connection is already set up (i guess you mean through control panel and network connections?), the system says it is connected and working fine, it just won't connect to the internet.
