It is a cable modem,does this allow for several pcs or laptops to be directly connected?
As myne does not.
You tried the ping test on the laptop?and it failed?

Go to device manager

open network
and click on the network card or cards in there individualy do this
right click on the card and click update driver
choose these options
install from a specific location,click next
check search for best drivers in these locations

uncheck removable CD/floppy
check box include these locations
type in box
C:\WINDOWS\system32
clcik next
update drives that way
as downloading and running does not always mean it is installed
is there any yellow sybols in device manger?

My ISP is Virgin, I think the modem only allows fo 1 comp to be connected, but i switch it off and transfer cable over then turn it back on when changing over.

Tried everything you said, all network cards installed ok and no problems (yellow symbols), I feel like jumping up and down on the !"£$%^&* thing

type in the box cmd click ok
