That is strange - it appears that your computer is seeing the router (yes, you have the right kind of ethernet cable). But I guess that the 192.168.2.1 thing is not working still?

Perhaps it's something to do with how Internet Explorer is trying to resolve the address 192.168.2.1. I'm guessing that you are using Internet Explorer 7. Click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options", then on the "Connections" tab. Make sure "Dial whenever a network connection is not present" is selected.

Then click on "LAN Settings" and make a note of which boxes are ticked - and tell me. Then uncheck all the boxes, keep clicking "OK" until you are back in IE7, and then try 192.168.2.1...

Hello again Jim
I did as you asked, went to LAN settings, none of the boxes were ticked, i left it that way, back clicked and tried 192.168.2.1 again.... it came up into router set up wizard!! Why? I did not do or set anything, strange things these computers!

Right, so now i can access the router set up.

I left Password blank as per instructions by default.
My user name ends ....co.uk@fs do i need the @fs part? i remember i had to use it to set up USB modem so i am assuming i do.
IP assigned by ISP . > leave?
VPI/VCI 0/0 > leave?
Encapsulation VC MUX . leave?
MTU 1454 > leave?
Wireless cahannel 11 > leave?

If i fill in all it asks ie, OTHER ISP, USERNAME, PASSWORD and leave the rest at default i still dont get connection nor a green solid ADSL light.
What does happen is "Local Area Connection-a cable is unplugged" icon comes up momentarily and then it stay in connecting status on screen and does no more,

While it is in this connecting (but going nowhere) mode i sneaked a peak into Network Connections and it says there that LAN is connected??

I know we are getting somewhere slowly and for that i am most grateful but still a bit lost at this stage.

Thanks again in advance Jim.
Matt

He he... they are indeed! I gave up asking "why" a long, long time ago and just try to remember roughly how I've solved problems in the past, and then muddle through...

As for the settings on the router, it would really help if you could tell me who your ISP is - different ISPs require different settings.

With regards to the funny connection messages you are connecting, this seems pretty standard. There are actually *two* connections present here - one between the computer and the router, and one between the router and the internet. The connection between the computer and the router now seems to be working fine, but obviously there's no connection between the router and the internet as you haven't set it up yet.

Get back to me with your ISP and I'll see what I can do - it seems that we've almost cracked it!

Hey Jim, !!

Ok then, i hope this is wat you need.

My ISP is Orange Broadband. Is that what you need to know?

I have a set of numbers i have found by a way i saw on YouTube to get your own IP address by ucing"ipconfig" or something like that.
Ip address, subnet and default gateway numbers. Do you need them?

I wont just go listing them on her just yet in case you dont need them and i am just guessing but would that be like giving someone a blank cheque or the keys to my car??!!

Thanks Jim for all your help so far..this site is THE BEST for this kinda thing.

Matt.

Hey Matt,

OK, according to Orange Settings - Advanced Settings from OrangeProblems.co.uk your settings for the router should be as follows - it's probably best to use the Setup Wizard in your router to enter this info as simply as possible. If you aren't asked to enter some of the information don't worry.

Username: yourname.orangehome.co.uk@fs - basically, whatever your broadband username is, the one you use on the Speedtouch modem.

Password: whatever your password is for the Speedtouch modem
IP assigned by ISP - yes.

VPI/VCI - 0/38

Encapsulation: PPPoA (or PPP over ATM or whatever your router calls it)

MTU 1454 - yes, leave this for the moment.

Wireless channel 11 - doesn't really matter, so just leave it as this.

Once you've got all of this entered you will hopefully be connected - make sure to let us know!

As for all the IP address stuff, we don't need that to connect the router to the internet. It's needed for more advanced stuff like opening ports in the router's firewall - that's something you can look forward to :-P

Jim,

Encapsulation only allows me to enter VC MUX or LLC ??

I changed other settings as directed and when set up is completed the modem reboots which looks normal, the ADSL light flashes 3 or 4 times and goes out, set up wizard then finishes on a status screen by which it says connecting but does not and remains that way.

( ADSL remains as "connecting"), then no further action.

Thanks again in advance.
Matt

Hi Matt,

Encapsulation wd be VCMUX I think - apologies.

This is all rather strange. I can, if you like, do a "remote assistance" session where I can log into your PC remotely and control your keyboard and mouse, and try and sort out the problem. The remote assistance won't work 100% as you'll have to disconnect from the internet in order to test the router, but it would get us part of the way there.

If you would like to do this you'll need to download a program from crossloop from www.crossloop.com; it would also be useful if you had Skype or an instant message program like MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger or whatever. The remote assistance is perfectly secure; you'll have to give me permission in order to access your PC and that permission runs out as soon as the remote assistance session ends - which you can do at any time.

Send me a private message if you'd like to do this. In the meantime, I guess you are using the same cable to connect your router to the phone as you were using with your Speedtouch modem? This would guarantee that the cable is working. Also, are you using the same phone socket for the router as you were for the Speedtouch? If both are plugged in at the same time to different phone sockets it can cause all sorts of problems.
