Do you have another network cable? It seems that the router is seeing the cable, but the PC isn't. I'm making an educated guess that the 1st PC light comes on on the router whenever there's something plugged in, irrespective of whether there's anything on the other end.

So, there's a chance the cable could be faulty.

If it's not that, can someone else step in to help? I'm running Vista so can't give precise instructions on how to mess about with the XP network settings.

Just so I've got this straight - when you try and connect to the Belkin router using an ethernet cable, you get nothing when you type 192.168.2.1 into your web browser? But then you use the same ethernet cable to connect to your modem, and it works? Or are you using a USB cable to connect to the modem?

It makes sense that your Belkin router isn't connecting to the ADSL line, since you haven't set the router up yet.

Hello again.
Heres is where i am at with this problem.
I cant get a solid green ADSL light on new modem / router but when i connect same cables to existing external modem (speedtouch) then i have solid ADSL and can connect.
This problem is driving me crazy.
I called Belkin cos i cant access 192.168.2.1 and they tell me they cant help me further till i have solid green ADSL on new router/modem.
See previous posts for my ongoing probs.
Please help!!
Note, i have tried 3 seperate filters.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Sorry JIM.
I just double posted.

I can access the 192.168.2.1 and access modem/router via wireless laptop and get into its settings, i followed what i have learnt such as leavind password blank and inputting username and password etc.
I can go into the other part of the house and confirm connection to laptop via router but cant get the cxonnection between router and pc so i can get the net through it.
I need to get solid green ADSL light on before Belkin will talk to me further.
Hope that helps Jim.
Matt

Jim,
I get back on net by reconnecting existing usb modem, no ethernet in use at this point untill i retry new modem/router.
Ta
Matt

Hi Matt,

Since you can get into the router wirelessly, the router seems to be fine. Ignore what Belkin are saying about not being able to help you until you have a solid ADSL light - this light won't be solid until you enter the correct username and password into the router. They should have told you this; I think they are trying to fob you off.

It looks like there are two possible problems here:

(1) Your ethernet cable is broken;
(2) Your computer's ehternet socket is broken or not configured properly.

Do you have access to another ethernet cable? If so, please try using this to connect the PC to the router and see if you can get in to the router using 192.168.2.1. For the record, the cable will need to be of the "straight" variety, as opposed to the "crossover" variety. The cable's type might be printed onto the cable.

If this doesn't work (or if you haven't got access to a spare ethernet cable) then we can look at the settings for your computer's ethernet socket.

To get to these settings, go into control panel, and then System, then click on the Hardware tab, then click on the Device Manager button. Look through the Device Manager list until you get to Network adapters, and double-click on it. What do you see there? Have any of the entries got a yellow triangle next to them, or a red cross?

Since you can get into the router wirelessly we could set it up, but there's not point until we've solved the ethernet connection problem. Just so we know, what ISP are you with? Once I know the answer to this I can get on with working out what you will need to type in for username/password and other settings in the router.

Cheers,

Jim

Here i am again Jim, ( DEEP BREATH) here goes....

Im online now via existing external USB modem.
I do however have router/modem plugged in at side of me also but without ADSL cable in at this point, obviously.

I just noted that if i power up router i get the icon (bottom right) showing piggybacked computer screens with a yellow dot moving left to right during powering/setting up of router then it disappears/hides.
Now, when i disconnect ethernet cable it advises me " Local Area Connection-a network cable is unplugged"
Could this indicate that the ethernet side of things is ok??

Cable is printed with " type 5E patch cable R7J304 UTP 4PR 24AWG type CM(UL) C(UL) ????????????

As you asked, i went into Device Manager and in Network Adapters i have 2 icons:...
First - SIS 900-Based PCI FAST ETHERNET ADAPTER
Second - SPEEDTOUCH USB ADSL PPP
Both with green icons, look normal?

Hope this helps you? (To help me?!)
Matt - Really appreciate this Jim.
