Default [Pending] Network adapter problem

WXP home edition has been perfectly working for a year with a cable modem but stopped recently. I think there is a problem with the PC, not modem since a 2nd PC (that I am using now) is working fine. Some facts:

Network Connections reports limited or no connectivity and cannot repair due 'inability to renew IP address'

ipconfig returns the autoconfig IP address 169-254-132-146 (port not working?)
ipconfig /release works: 0.0.0.0 etc
ipconfig /renew returns this message: 'An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection 2: Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request timed out'

I pinged the modem: Ping 71.204.132.152 and it returned this: Packets sent 4, Packets lost 4 and Destination host unreachable. An old backup PC returns all packets OK.

LAN properties show TCP/IP to be set to obtain address automatically. DNS too. DHCP enabled.

Device Manager says network adapter is working properly.

I unistalled the adapter (Via) and reinstalled.. Maybe not a driver problem? Hardware on mobo problem?

Adapter is on the mobo.

Have tried three ethernet ables and three modems. I reverted to original modem which works on the backup PC but the main PC. Backup PC is W2K, bery basic.

I even used Ghost to go back to a point before I had the problem but no better.

Suggestions welcomed!

Al

Default Re: Network adapter problem

How old is this PC-- any warranty ?
If so contact the seller/mobo maker-- see if it's covered.
If you don't want to bother for a network card--see below

Probably the simplest fix for this-- is to install a PCI NIC-- if you have an open slot-- they are not much money.
You have tried almost every hardware troubleshooting trick I thought of already... I would begin to suspect the adapter itself. Simplest just to bypass it. I would suggest at least a gigabyte adapter these days.

There is one option not covered - re-install the TCP/Ip stack - see here or use the winsockfix utility.
