Hi ppk and welcome to PCHF, what i would like you to do is to go into Device Manager again, highlight each device that has a question mark beside and press the delete key on your keyboard. Do this for each one and then reboot, and Windows should pick up the devices again.

hmm, ok go to Start, click Run and type in the open box sfc /scannow , the System File Checker utility will run and go through replacing any damaged or missing system files. You will need the Windows XP CD to do this.

Oh sorry my bad, i assumed it was running XP. Does your friend have a Windows 98 CD? If so go into the Device Manager right click on the USB device and click properties, and then click on the Driver Tab and then click Update Driver. Click Next on the first screen and then choose the option (Install from a specific Location). Uncheck Search in these locations, and then check the box that says (Include this location in the search) and then click browse, and select the CD Rom drive and click Next.
