Hi all, not been on here for years so just signed up again.
Quick question. My mate asked me to look at his pc this morning saying he had no internet connection so I went and had a look.
Basically he does have a connection. He as an IP address, I can ping google etc but IE, mesenger etc doesn't work.
I couldn't stay at his for long so set up a user account for remote assistance and remote asssistance works too.
I thought it would be something simple like Norton but I've removed that and no joy still. I suspect it something to do blocked ports but what will be blocking them?
Anybody got any ideas what it could be?
He's using xp, cable modem, no router.

I assume you know your way around the command (Dos) box in Windows so, 2 things to try....

1) Run a tracert to, let's say, Google and note down where it times out
2) run the command ipconfig /flushdns

back to the PCHF.

C:\Documents and Settings\bob>tracert Google
Tracing route to Google [°ÿ]
over a maximum of 30 hops:
1 8 ms 9 ms 16 ms No resources.

Did you flush the DNS yet?

Yeah, said it was succesfull but still the same outcome with the tracert

If it's what I think it is, there is an issue with your TCP/IP Stacks..but in Windows XP, this cannot be "reinstalled" So we need some third party software.
However, this software weighs in at around 200kb, so it's nothing and very quick

Go here, download LSPFix, run the program when it's finished.
If it finds errors, let it fix it automatically. Restart your computer.
If it doesn't find errors, then I was wrong.
