Default Can connect to router...but not internet.

Hi guys, have a massive problem here and its really getting to me. I use a laptop as my primary PC. It has built in wireless to connect to my wireless network. It does this fine but my office where I use my laptop is so far away from the router that the signal is week and the opperation of the internet is very tempramental (repositioning the router closer is not an option).

I have tried many wireless USB devices, have a linksys adapter and also another usb one with a detachable ariel. These both connect to the access point no probs but not the internet. On all of the wireless adapters I have them set to obtain the IP automaticly, I dont have them turned on at the same time.

I really dont have a clue why the internal wireless works but the usb ones dont. If anyone can give me any help on this at all it would be great, becuase I am at the end and don't have a clue what else I can try. Thanks

Nick.

Hello Immortal,

You might try a Wireless Range Extender like the DLink DWL-G710. These extenders act as repeaters for you router. This will help improve the signal.

Thanks for the reply LC, but I dont want to spend more money, networking around this joint has cost me plenty lol. The annoying thing is I KNOW it works, but its just a matter of fixing it. I am pretty sure its something to do with the router...I just dont know what

Nick.

I know the feeling Immortal...So we do it the hard way...lol

Can you give me some info on your setup? What router do you use? Some routers you can increase the transmit power. Are the adapter 802.11 B or G? Some G routers wil not recognise 802.11b unless told to do so. I'll do my best to help untill a staff member gets free. Oh...Don't worry...I run a mixed network so I know a bit on the subject...

Awsome LC thanks for your help

Well...here is some info:

Router: Netgear DG834GT
Adapter: Linksys WUSB54G

My laptop is just standard its an Advent, if you are in the US I dont think you will have heard of it, but I really dont think the laptop has anything to do with the problem. I used the adaptor easily on another network, its just mine that has the problem. Thats what makes me think its something to do with the router.

Thanks for taking the time to help me out

thanks, Nick

Ok Immortal..Lets start at the USB adapter...Nice choice if I may say. We need to go into manual setupin your setup software. Make sure your network shows, hilight that then click manual setup to create a profile. If the DHCP server of the modem/router is handing out IPs the we will stay with obtaining IP automaticly. Now we need to set the adapters wireless mode to Infrastructure Mode and SSID to what you have set the router's to. Remember this is case sensitive. Leave the advanced settings at default for now then click save to create the profile. Two points Immortal. One: Until you can get connected to the router and Internet just disable wireless security. This will eliminate one headache. Two: Make sure the access point is enabled and the router is transmitting on the same channel as the usb adapter... This will give you a start..
