Default [Resolved] Old Network Problem

At work we have a very old network consisting of an NT4 server connected to 5 windows95 pc's. (don't laugh too loud)

Earlier this week one of the pc's died and so we went out and bought a replacement with Windows XP Pro installed.

The problem is that I can't get the server to accept the computer/user/password. I have changed the name of the new pc the same name as the old dead one but when I run the network ID wizard it says "bad user name or password".

I can ping the server ok.

Are ther any other settings that need altering? Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Questor,

Would the NT4 server happen to be a DC, or just a file server?

The server runs a DOS based accounts program (Pegasus) that the workstations can access and it also hold MS Office files (Access and Excel) that are run from programs loaded on the workstations.

Hi Questor,

It take it your trying to map a network drive to the server is that right?

If so, you need to connect with more than just the username, but you also need to specify the name of the server too.

For example: servername\username
and then the password as usual.

If you don't do this, XP will try to user local users details to authenticate, which of course won't work.

Cheers m8. I will give that a go on Tuesday when I am back at work.

I take it that at the "Control/Alt/Del" login screen I enter \\SERVER1\USERNAME

Woa, I'm confused now Questor, where did the logon screen come from? Is this what you need to do with the Windows 95 PC's? Do these PC's have a logon screen that show a username, password and domain? That would suggest the NT4 server is a domain controller and not just a simple file server?

The instructions I gave you to access the files only. It's works very much different if your PC's are part of a domain.

Sorry m8. I don't think I explained myself very well. The NT4 server is definately a Domain Controller. The W95 PC's have a login screen that just shows User and Password (no domain).

I tried to set up the new XP PC as similar as I could to the old W95 one. ie I gave it the same computer name and tried to set it up with the "Network ID" wizard, but it wont accept the User/Password. I can ping the server ok but I just can't login.

I have been Googling to try and get some ideas. One source said theat Netbuei needed to be installed. Do you think this is worth trying?
