Default home network probs

ive just had to reinstall xp on this computer as we had a prob with either a virus or spyware that would flood the system everytime we would try and open any program, so we couldnt run any anti-v/s progs to get rid.

before this computer was setup as being the main computer/server and it would feed the other 3 computers with their internet connection, but that meant that this computer would have to be on if we wanted to be online using another.

so now we have decided to run the broadband modem into the router/hub then branch off to each individual computer, like how this picture demonstates, so any computer can connect aslong as the broadband modem is on

but now the problem is, only this computer can connect to the internet, I did turn this computer off and then another could somehow connect, but as soon as all computers are rebooted at the same time this computer connects and the others cant

can anyone advise??

The problem is probably that the other computers are still set up to share that one computer's connection. Delete and re-create the network in each computer and select "This computer connects directly to the internet" (or whatever it is) instead of the one about sharing from another computer.

I thought that too when I first looked at the diagram spaceman, but #1 is just a modem, not a PC with ICS. Is that right Stu?

One more question though. When you shut down "this computer", and reboot the others, can just one connect at a time, or can they all connect? (If they can all connect this would signify a PC configuration issue, if only one can connect at a time, then this would be a router issue).

thanks for the replies

#1 is just a broadband modem

they will only connect one at a time - basically which ever computer boots up quickest gets the connection.

all relevant lights are showing as connected on the router

OK Stu, this is a configuration problem. The installation of XP on "this computer" is only a co-insidence. There are two places this problem could be. Either (a), each of the PC's are now using static IP addresses or (b), your router is now set to only use 1 DHCP address. Have any configuration changes been made to any of the other PC's or the router?

First of all, access your router page from internet explorer (normally 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1). Look for your DHCP range, and make sure the range is high enough to support each of your PC's.

no, no settings have been changed but they were/are set to connect to the internet via another computer

the router doesnt have any settings that can be changed, its more of a junction box type of thing, this is a pic of the same model - tbh i think i was using the wrong phrase when calling it a router

Oh! That maybe why. No problems, at least we know the internet is working, all we should need to do is configure each of the PC's for this new configuration. Just to get an idea of how they are set up at the moment, can you do the following, and paste the results back here?

- Go to Start, Run, and type in ipconfig /all
- Right click on the titlebar, and go to Edit, followed by Select All.
- Right click again, and go to Edit, Copy.
- Paste the results back here.
