Default Wireless Router/Connection Speed Changes - Questions

I just installed my mom's wireless router for her. Long story short, it took six ****ing hours. Who knew that the only WEP key that would work correctly is the first of the four? Why even give me for if three of them don't work. ****ing garbage.

Anyway, I'm terribly concerned about this new fangled wireless internet. I have two Bellsouth Fastaccess DSL connections in my house. The one I'm posting from now is mine and a trip to dslreports.com tells me that I'm sitting pretty at a 2980kbps download speed. My upload speed is a meager 319kbps, but that's not what the problem here is.

My mom's DSL, post-wireless connection, is chugging along at about 150kbps down. That's ****ing awful. Her upload speed is fine, it's in the 290's. Although I didn't check her speed before I switched her over to wireless, I'm pretty **** sure that it was running at something similar to mine. I was using her connection for a long time because mine was accidentally cancelled by the geniuses at Bellsouth. And I never experienced terrible connection speeds.

Wireless isn't suppose to do this to a connection, right? Are there any settings I'm missing the resolve this issue? The icon in her system tray says that she's connected at like 54Mbps. Something like that, if you need an exact number to help me out I'll get back to you, I'm tired as **** right now.

We've got two laptops and a printer on the wireless network. One laptop is running Windows 2000 and the other is running Windows Vista. The router is a "Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router" with.. get this.. "Speed Booster". It's 2.4Ghz, whatever that means, and the model number is WRT54GS.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and Happy Easter.

Hi Rikkublue,

Welcome to PCHF !!!

Please keep in mind we're a family oriented site.

I'm not the most savvy when it comes to networking. One thing I wanted to ask though,

Does your mom use a cordless telephone? If so is it used near the router frequently? The reason I ask is that most cordless phones currently also use the 2.4 GHz frequency band and can interfere with the wireless signal used by wireless networking hardware.

Fortunately though, I used to be a "Telephone Sales Representative" for BellSouth, and while I deeply apologize for any dinnertime calls I may have made to your abode, the experience has granted me a few insights into their service.

One other thing you might want to chick into is the level of service you are subscribed to. Bell south has a 56kbps download service that although sounds like dial-up over a DSL line is really truley a 56 kbps connection as opposed to roughly 36.6 kbps. Next up is the 256kbps DSL Lite. As this more closely matches the speed she's achieving, this may be the issue, though that doesn't really jive with me since her upload speeds exceed this bu far and I can't really remember what the upload speeds are for each particular service. This is also assuming I understood you correctly when you said you had 2 connections. I'm assuming you meant 2 seperate accounts and 2 seperate lines in as opposed to just using 2 seperate phone jacks, since, if i remember correctly they pack in 4 seperate filters in with their bundle.

you may need to tweak/optimize your operating system registry setting for broadband.

DSL Reports has a great tool called Dr. TCP that can adjust TCP Recieve Window, MAX MTU, windows scaling, time stamping, and selective acks to improve download speed.

use it in tandem with the DSL Reports Twek Test.

you will need to know your connections stated or advertised download speed.

follow the isntructions and use dls reports twek test.
