Default Weird Ethernet Cable Problem

Hi guys,

I just came back home happy with my purchase of a 20m ethernet cable which could finally allow me to play my online games smoothly instead of a wireless connection.

Or so I thought.

I plugged the cable into my modem, pulled it to the PC in my room, and it says "A Network Cable is Unplugged".

Well, thinking that it couldn't be that I bought a faulty cable, I moved my desktop out to my living room, plugged it with another shorter cable and the network works.I plugged my 20m cable into my PC in the living room and it works too!

Happily, I moved my computer back into my room and plugged the 20m cable from my living room to my PC and it does not work again!

I did physical checks on my cable and as I pulled it. No awkward tangles and all. So what could be wrong? Why does the 20m cable work in the living room and not when its pulled to my room?

Maybe my house is haunted.

Anyway, would really appreciate any assistance. Thanks fellas!

That does seem rather odd.

Well under the assumption you used the same modem in both your room and the livingroom, as far as I can tell the 20m cable should work flawlessly.

I list some suggestions to try and test if you have not done so already.

1 - Use the same modem to test.
2 - Use the same wired modem port to test the cable.
3 - Is there a potential obstruction of any kind that could be impeading cable performance? The cable may have a slight bend in it when running it about the room and worsen an already flawed cable design, i.e. there may be a bent or stripped cable on the inside of the CAT5 you cannot see.
4 - (This is unlikely but worth a shot) Is the wall outlet from which you receive your internet good?
5 - See if the shorter cable will work in your room.

In the end you may just have a faulty cable or as you said ghosts. Not everything in computers makes sense as I have learned over the years.
