Default [Fixed] linksys router (non wireless) difficulties

i just moved so now im using a new pc and i took my router from my old pc with me... ive hooked up the router like i usually would but then it wont connect to the interent and i get a bubble saying i have limit connectivity and may not be able to use teh internet etc etc.... i also notice when i went to ipconfig teh default gateway was blank so i couldnt put in teh usual linksys modem ip addres to try to configure it.

also tried ipconfig/renew with no luck my previous computer was a DSL connection sdo i had to go into the router configuration and set it up for ppoe (or whatever) then but in the username and password of thr dsl modem to use teh router as a bridge... no wim back on a cable modem wheer bridging (i think) isnt necessary and all i should have to do is plug and play (which was the case in teh past when i used a cable modem before switching to dsl so im GUESSING its still in bridge mode and trying to connect using the username and passeord from the dsl connection but like i said im on cable now so thats no longer needed thing is i cant get into teh router IP address to change things back due to having no internet access when the router is plugged up (ive tried) any tips?

HI antoinjones,

if you're on cable now - you need a cable modem/router...to my knowledge (not very much with cable to be honest) you can't use an dsl modem/router on that sort of connection...they talk differently.

Someone please correct me if i'm wrong

Hello antoinejones,

Sounds like your ethernet card is not talking to the router. If you have the router manual it will tell you how to reset the router to factory setting. Do that first. Remember, we are working blind here. We need the router model and cable modem model. I't may be as GaRHaR says. The router and modem may not be compatible. Make sure the cat5 cable is hooked from the PC to a lan port on the router. Open your browser the enter 192.168.0.1 in the address bar. If you are asked for username and password I believe for lynksys routers enter admin for password. Leave the other space blank. This is after factory reset.

Make sure the ethernet card is configured with tcp/ip. Also let me know if there is any continous flashing lights on the router when you turn it on.

Good Luck,

well before i get to teh other stuff in response to GaRHaR's reply i am using a cable modem and teh router is both cable and dsl compatible as i said before when i first bought the router i was using cable internet and i hooked up teh router without doin anything to it and it worked perfectl;y right out of the box (im guessing that was on factory settings) later on down the line i switch to DSL since it was xheaper than cable my router still worked fine the way it was on my DSL modem but i talked to the DSL ISP about technical issues i was having to which they had me set the connection as a bridge and i had to change to router to ppoe and put in the connection username and password (asd yuou need that stuff on a DSL connection wherae cable internet you dont)... but now im on a completely different computer which is running on a cable modem and i now have my router hooked to this computer (i no longer have the aforementioned computer) and i get no internet connection at all when i hook teh router up (though i get a message saying internet is connected at 100mpbs (or something liek that) and that i have limited access but may not be able to use the internet etc etc) so it can definately recognize my internet cable is plugged to something otgherwise it just be stuck with the usual network cable unplugged message)

so its my guess thatteh router is still in bridge mode and thinsg in trying to connect using my ppoe connection instead of cable connection so liek you said switching it backl to factory setting might work thing is once i hook teh router up i have no internet connection so i cant go to 192.168.0.1 (i get the page cannot be displayed screen) to change its settings

No Worries antoinejones,

Let's take it one step at a time. It will mean switching cables from modem to router and back. I know it is a hassle but necessary for now. We need to get the PC and router talking. Once we can get the router reset to factory setting then we can go from there. There is a manual reset button on the router itself. On back if it is like my lynksys router. The manual will tell you how to use that button to reset to factory settings. The reason I need the model numbers for the router and modem is so I can get the manuals to look thru so I can better help you.

TTFN!
