Default [Fixed] Network path not found : (

Hi

I hope it's ok to reply to an old thread but I think this is the answer to my question, I just can't make it work!

I've just bought a new PC laptop and I want to be able to transfer all my files from my old desktop PC... I've got my laptop connected wirelessly to a Belkin Modem with wireless Router and then deduced from the post below that I might be able to plug my PC into the router via ethernet cable but im not sure if thats right...? I've followed the instructions below but it just keeps saying Network path not found.

When I first got my desktop PC, I managed to network it to my ibook (thanks to a very patient chap on a dfferent forum who talked me through it over the course of a wekk and finally found the problem was actually my norton security blocking the connection) and was able to do this just by connecting the two by ethernet cable. Obviously if I can connect my PC to laptop via the wireless router that would be great but I didn't actually realise I was buying anything other then a wireless internet modem!

Thanks very much for your help

Shirley

Hello shirley,

Welcome to PCHF.

You hijacked another person's thread. If you have any problems, select a category from the top of your screen, and then start a new topic. We can then help you out on a more individual basis.

As long as both PC's are connected to the router in some form, either wirelessly or via ethernet cable.

Can both PC's access the internet via this router?

Ooo... sorry... I thought I was doing the right thing by not starting a new thread for something that had already been addressed...sorry, im quite new to forums! : (

No, I can't connect to the internet via my desktop PC but that might be just that I haven't got the settings right... it just says no dial tone so if I need to access the internet I have to unplug the cable from the router and plug it into the modem for the PC (which then works fine...).

Thank you!

Hey shirley,

Did you say you had your PC connected to your wireless router via ethernet cable?

Hello!

Sorry, I didn't receive a notification there had been a reply! Yes, I think it's an ethernet cable... it's the one I used to connect my ibook to my PC and is now connecting my PC to the router. The light is on on the router to show that a computer is connected in that port.

Thank you!

ek, I've not seen this kind of configuration before. Changing your network settings to connect to your router may disturb whatever connection you have configured for you iBook.

I believe either your using an ethernet crossover cable instead of a standard ethernet cable, or your network settings are configured to talk to your iBook. The reason why I say this is because by default, you should be able to connect to the internet but simply plugging in your ethernet cable.

OK..

From both PC's, can you do the following:
- Go to Start, Run and type in cmd
- From the command prompt type in ipconfig /all
- Right click on the title menu and go to Edit followed by Select All.
- Right click again, and go to Edit followed by Paste.

Paste the contents of each back here, and this should give me an idea of how you are set up.
