Default Do my IP address belong to me?

I did a IP lookup on my pc and it showed my location in another city but on the outside of the city where I am actually located. The google IP locator normally pin points my location exactly but last week the cable provider (road runner) came out and gave me another cable modem and I was wondering if they just forgot to register the new modem to my present location.

Is it possible that I have an IP address that supposed to belong to someone else? And if so can road runner tell who this IP address belongs to from their records even though the modem is hooked up in my house?

By the way, I am not using any IP blocker or anything like that. I just have a Linksys router.

Hi Eli, welcome to the PCHF.

IP addresses are normally given out by the ISP as "dynamic" which means each time you connect to the ISP...you will get a new one. Cable is always connected so it's very rare to get a new IP address - the fact you've just got a new router explains this part.

You can request to have a "static" ip address which is yours until you say otherwise - and it costs a bit more normally...Unless you're hosting a web/mail server their is no need for a static ip address.

Hope this helps and if you need anything else, just ask away

Well what was strange is my last router IP pointed out exactly where I was but this one says I am in another city. I dont mind it though because I kinda like being misplaced on the IP grid. So if I was to call Road runner and ask them who this IP address belongs to will they know its me? See hidden is not always so bad. Does this mean I wouldnt need an IP hider program?

FYI -- i don't use IP hidder programs...and I'm completely invisible on the net unless I want to be found

And Road Runner will know it's your IP address

When you enter your IP address into an IP location finder, the site is guessing where your IP is located, based on where your ISP is located.

It's not up to your ISP to register your IP address to a location. It's up to the IP location sites to guess where you are.
