Is there any way we can access the internet on a Laptop & PC at the same time using 1 modem?

I've been told the only way is through a router. Is there any other way without buying any additional hardware?

P.S. We're on NTL Broadband

a cross crimmed LAN cable should work...but i dont know the details to that...i am sure some one more qualified here will guide you through it
