Ive already fitted a network cable which runs for about 3 metres outside my house and was about to fit another one when i read that they are not supposed to be fitted outside the house due to the threat of lightning striking it!!

Anyone got any thought opinions on this?

Well, I suppose that yes, there is a possibility of that happening. You could always use some sort of plastic conduit or shielding and then earth that.
