Question can't connect to web with router, only through modem?

hey there, just moved into a new apartment from a house and i'm having a problem. i am unable to connect to the internet when trying to use my linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router. i am using charter cable high speed internet service. my laptop and my pc both recognize my router and my network, but can't connect to the internet with it. i am able to connect to the internet when i directly connect my laptop to the AMBIT DATA CABLE Modem Model # U10CO18. i have been using this router for years without issue. charter gave me a new modem because for some reason my old motorola surfboard wouldn't work. i haven't called linksys yet for help, but i was hoping maybe you guys could help me! any suggestions?

also, if i can get this to work, how do i make my network secure? i am in an apartment complex, and i don't need anyone leeching off my internet you know!

Howdy alecsputnik,
Just some quick easy questions.. Have you installed your router?

When you go to your network connections (with the router connected) how many icons do you have in there 1 or 2?
As far as your network being seure the router will take care of that.
Look on the botom of your modem and you will find an access code. type it in your address bar, and see what comes up (again with the router connected)
