Default End server/client relation in safe mode?

My friend was recently allowed to take home a desktop computer from his school since they were upgrading the pc's. With the computer he also got a name and password to log on with. When he got home he turned it on and entered the name and password, but since it cannot access the server becuase it is at his home and not school it will not let him on the computer. It cannot verify the name/pass with the server database.

It's a windows 98 (not sure of SE or not). I can get it into safemode and onto the OS but do not know what to do from there. Is there a way to make it stop trying to connect to the server so he can just use it link a normal computer and not a client?

He always comes to me with there problems since I fix little crappy things on his computer, but I am stumped on this one; can anyone help?

At the login screen, do you have a dropdown box in which you can select the school "Domain" and the "Local PC"? If you do then you should be logging in on the NON-Domain login.
