Default [Resolved] Wireless Network Problem

Hello Everyone.
I ve been expriencing some problems with my new wireless router. I recently (2 days ago actually) bought a US Robotics 9110 wireless router. Connected it to my desktop compture via ethernet. I made the nececary setup stuff, like my country and dsl password. Then connected to internet. Everything was OK. But i have a Laptop with wireless capabilities. I connected to my modem with my laptop computer. Because of leechers and attacker i wanted to enable WPA enctyption. When i enabled it, my laptop started losing internet connection. Everytime i connected, after a few minutes i lost connection. There's no such problem with WEP encryption. So ain't i going to be able to use WPA function in my laptop? (even though i also enabled MAC adress filter as a secondery security option i want to use WPA)
AND, my second and more importont problem is that my network is very very slow. I know that when you enable WPA/WEP encryption, MAC adress filtering, firewall (both routers and windows XPs), antivirus programmes; you network speed decreases. But this is beyon that. I mean how long can copying a 400 mb file (from desktop to ethernet to modem to laptop via wireless) take? It takes 120 minutes in my network. So what can i do about that?
Here are my system specs:
Desktop: Amd Athlon XP, Up-to-date Windows XP SP2 with Avast antivirus
Laptop: Intel Centrino 1.86 Ghz, Up-to-date Windows XP SP2 with Avast antivirus
Us Robotics 9110 Wireless Router

I hope Someone can help me with these 2 problems.
Thank You..

Hey rolanddes!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Sorry to be so late replying to you.

What's the strength of the wireless connection?
I'm not sure about the WPA thing, perhaps it has something to do with the routers firmware, perhaps you can try updating that.

Blue

Strength is fine. It is 54mbps. I have updated firmware already. But problem still continues. I dont even care about wpa anymore. I have wep, mac filtering, firewalls, ssid name changed, ssid broadcasting disabled. My problem is getting a slower speed of file transfer through network, as i get my laptop and my modem closer.

Are you able to check speeds having 2 computers connected through cables? Perhaps your router is just a little slow (although that would be unbelievable).
