Default [Resolved] Wireless Router hell

Hi

I am having real problems setting up my wireless network at home. I have DSL cable router which is then atached to Netgear Wireless Router (WPNT834) off eBay.

Two problems, firstly, the region is set to USA and i'm in UK. But I can still pull up channel 11 so I don't know if thats a problem. But I can't find the router when I search. Have tried it in b only, b&G, g only, 64 and 240 modes.

My laptop has a intel Pro/wireless 2200BG adaptor (not sure if that is g or b band) and all my pc's have Belkin G wireless G USB network adaptors.

I'm at a complete loss as both my laptop and my pc's can pick up other networks. Do i need to send the router back and get one region unlocked or is there a way I can do it myself?

Cheers

Kudos

Hello kudosangel,

Can you connect directly to the router via ethernet cable? if it's already been used, then the connection is probably encypted, hidden, or the wireless may not even be enabled. You will need to reconfigure, but you won't be able to do this wirelessly.

Yeh can connect directly, have turned the encryption off and it is broadcasting its SSID but can't find it on wireless networks. Does the fact that the region is locked to USA make a difference?

To be honest, I've never thought about it. It shouldn't be locked to a particular region, since we use the same protocols, but some ISP's do tend to lock their routers, so that it can only by used by them, and you don't go selling it on e-bay!

Normally, updating the firmware will overwrite any locks put on by ISP's, but updating any kind of firmware is a risky process. If anything goes wrong during the update, you won't have a second chance to try it again!

Hey madmonkey

Firmware update went fine, I managed to get the region section unblocked.

Sadly still have no joy at all in getting the network to show itself! I have looked at the settings, changed the SSID and made sure it is broadcasting, but still no joy :-(

Hey Kudos, do you have any other wireless devices you can try, or try your laptop on another wireless network somewhere else like a friends house. Just something to rule out any local problems with the laptop itself?
