Default [Fixed] File and print Sharing

hey everyone,

I have been trying to setup file and print sharing with an xp and 98 computer at my friends. But when i put in the flash drive from the xp into the 98 it goes through the wizard and asks for the Windows 98 Second Edition CD-ROM and then we put it in and it says it cant find the required file vserver.vxd on the disk and it is not on the disk because i searched it with the xp pc. I have setup fine on the xp pc but not on the 98.

Can someone please help me sort out my friends problem.

Hmmm... did the usb drive come with an installation cd, possibly with the Win98SE drivers on it?

tbh, you shouldn't use the 'wizards' for setting up networking..or anything regarding networking

You'll need the Win98SE cd drive whenever you install any part of networking however...this is the painful thing which i don't miss when not using win98

Exactly GarHar,

How do i setup file and print sharing without and the usb drive was one i had that it asked to use in the windows xp file and print sharing setup so that i could put the settings easily onto the win98.

And the win98se disk doesnt have the driver vserver.vxd which it always asks for, stopping me from completing it on the win98

Right well i have installed manually now and shared some folders and a printer. (i sorted by copying vserver.vxd from another 9x system).

But the two pcs don't seem to detect each other. How can i get them to detect each other, nor can i detect printers or folders?

p.s. he is using an orange livebox.

Helly my friend.

Few things.
- They should both have the same workgroup name.
- They should both be on the same IP range and subnet.

Few questions:
- Can the two PC's ping each other, for example ping 192.168.1.2?
- Have the folders and printers been shared?

Cheers madmonkey my helly? (typo) friend.

- i have already set them to the same workgroup name (sorry should have said)

- Will check ip range and subnet.

- Didnt think about pinging but when i next see him i will try.
- yes folders have been shared as well as printer.

I cant actually get them to see each other under network places (xp) and network neighborhood (98).
