Ok let me know.

Also try mapping drives instead of trying to access them through Network Neighbourhood, using their IP address instad of workstation name just in case there are any resolution problems.

- Right click on My Computer, Map Network Drive
- Path should be \\[IP Address]\[share name]

No, when you you share a folder or drive or printer (right click, and go to Sharing and Security (winxp), Sharing (win 9x), you have to give it a share name. Use that name when mapping drives or sharing printers.

Let me know if you want me to exaplain in more detail.

Is it local area connection > properties > tcp/ip > use the following ip address.

They may be autoconfigured. You can check the IP address by going to Start, Run, type cmd, and then type in ipconfig

The first three parts of the address should be the same, but the last digit should be different. The subnet mask should be identical on both PC's. The IP is normally 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x

Right Hi Mad!

I have got him check the ip range and subnet and they are both correct (sent me screenies).

The xp pc can ping the 98.

The 98 pc cant ping the xp however. (what is the problem here)

Oh and btw i will get him to try mapping soon, but im wondering about the failed ping.

Most likely the firewall is blocking this.

- In Windows Firewall, go Advanced tab.
- Click on Local Area Connection, Settings.
- In the ICMP tab, put a tick in "Allow incoming echo request"
