Exclamation [Answered] Setting up a network between pocket PC and Desktop issues

Hey everyone..I need some serious help. I just got this Mobilepro 800 Laptop with Windows CE 2.11 installed on it and some pretty basic programs.

What I want to know is how to set up a network between my new MobilePro 800 and my Desktop computer, which has Microsoft Windows XP home Edition, SP 2 on it.

Please help me out here, I'm a complete networking n00b and need this dumbed down to simple, easy-to-follow steps, so that I don't screw anything up.

I do not have a wireless card for my MobilePro yet, so dfoing it wirelessly is currently out of the question.

Hello TriforceKid!

I'm not that familiar with Windows CE, but I am very familiar with networking and I'm aware that the Mobilepro 800 should come with a 10mb ethernet connection that will allow you to connect to your PC.

Firstly, do you have the necessary equipment: either

a) two network cables and a hub or switch?
b) two network cables and a hubbel? -or-
c) a network crossover cable?

If you have these then your pritty much ready to go.

Next stage is to assign IP address's to your devices so that they can talk to each other. Let's start with your PC.

- Go to your Control Panel
- Double click on Network connections
- Right click on Local Area Connection and go to Properties
- Click on Internet Protocal (TCP/IP) and go to Properties
- You should find your IP settings are set to automatic, change them to 192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0.

- Go back to Control Panel and double click on System
- Click on the Computer Name tab and Change
- Give your PC a workstation name and make sure it is part of a workgroup called WORKGROUP

Finally, go to your MobilePro and perform that same actions, with the exception that you will need to give it an IP address of 192.168.1.3 instead. Bear in mind, you will find these settings in a different place with Windows CE.

You should now be able to see each other in Network Neighbourhood.

From this point forward you should be able to do what you need between these two devices. Remember that if you wish to print or access each others files, you must first share what you need. For example, if you wish to share files from your C Drive, you must first right click on Local Disk (C) in My Computer, and click on Sharing and Security.

Hey Madmonkey & TheTriforceKid!
Welcome to PC Helpforum!

Thanks for your input on this thread Madmonkey.

Note that instead of 192.168.1.x, there are also networks that use 10.0.0.x

there are also networks that use 172.16.168.x 192.168.146.x

infact, there are nteworks that use x.x.x.x

standard home networks are 192.168.0.xxx or 10.0.0.xxx

You guy's gone IP address mad! MAD! 192.168.1.x or 192.168.0.x was most commonly used, which I why I used it in this example. 10.x.x.x is overkill, your never gunna use a class A network in your own house, unless of course you plan to take over the world! Besides, I thought this thread was closed?
