Hi there welcome to pchf , this should help you

Using a Wireless Laptop at Work and at Home

Or if thats a bit hard to understand ( Like i found it was =))

try this ( I'm assuming it is a xp if not tell me lol )

  1. Click on the Start button, then All Programs, then Accessories, then Communications, and finally Network Setup Wizard
  2. Click the Next button twice
  3. Select "Other" and click Next
  4. Select "This computer connects to the Internet directly or through a network hub…" and click Next
  5. Ignore the warning and click Next
  6. Change the Computer description to your hall abbreviation plus room number plus name (e.g. YTT144F Jane Smith)
  7. Change the Computer name to your first and last name (without a space, such as Jane_Doe or JohnSmith) and click Next
  8. Change the Workgroup to RESHALL and click Next
  9. Click Next again
  10. Select "Just finish the wizard; I don't need to run the wizard on other computers" and click Next
  11. Click Finish
  12. When prompted, click the Restart button. (After the computer restarts, Internet services, such as Web and e-mail should work.)

Hi mrbloby, wlcome to the forums.

Can you please tell me what kind of operating system the laptop is?

If it is XP Pro, you will need to join it to the domain, and have the IP address set to "obtain automatically"

I'd suggest contacting your system administrator on joining the Domain, as you need a username/password to do this.

If your laptop is XP Home, you will still need to set the IP address as obtain automatically, but you won't be able to join the domain.
