Hi madgaz...
home networking is extremely simple...well compared to business networking

Generally it's just plug it in and walk away, but adding wireless to the mix can sometimes be tricky.

Can you please goto (on both laptop and computer) right click on My Network Places select Properties and then select Local Area Network on the pc, and Wireless Connection on the laptop.

I'm assuming both are Windows XP. Make sure both have
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Once you've done this, we'll get into the more deeper settings if required.

If they both aren't XP, the only difference should be QoS Packet Scheduler might not be available.

Also...with networking...

There are 3 ways you can get access to each computer.

1) the most common...through My Network Places -> Entire Network -> Microsoft Network -> Workgroup -> Computer name.
2) Typing the computer name preceeded with "\\" in Start -> Run or folder browser you have open at the time.
3) Typing the ip address in the same method of option 2.

So, say you have the pc called "HomePC" and the laptop called "Laptop"
You can goto Start -> Run -> \\homepc

From the laptop, this should give you access to the PC...sometimes this doesn't work, as windows is picky about certain things and will return saying "Access Denied" or words to that effect. If this is the case, you can type in the IP Address of the computer...the IP Address is it's identity on the network...which you can assign yourself, or have it automatically assigned.

Infact, lets check to make sure they are on the same "range".

If you goto Start -> Run -> type in cmd and push OK(on both computers)
Then type ipconfig and confirm that both IP Address and Subnet mask are the same...The IP address can have the last 3 digits vary, and it is fine...for example 192.168.0.xxx
The ip address can be anything, but as long as the first 3 sets of numbers match with each computer, this is a good sign.

Now, i'm sorry to do this to you - but i'm leaving from work now, and won't be home for probably about an hour. However, if that doesn't make sense, or you need further help, just post and i won't be too much longer (or one of the other techs will answer) Have a play around, but remember what you've changed. If it "breaks" we can also fix it.

For now, good luck

ok...this is a fairly common problem.

It just means that there is a slight setting that is wrong and always overlooked.

Can you tell me the IP address of each computer please?
