Default [Resolved] Bit of a network problem

Hey members of PCHF,

I've got a network problem for quite some time now. I've got a laptop and pc, connected to the internet through a wireless router. Now I would like a network connection between the laptop and pc, but I can't manage to get it working. I've tried to connect them with a network cable and did the network wizard, but my pc doesn't recognize my laptop and vice versa. I've asked some friends of me to look at it (Bluefish and RubenTC), but they can't fix it either. I've been to a LAN party recently with my laptop, and everything went fine back then. Does anyone of you have a clue on how to get the network started? Both laptop and pc have Windows XP.

Thanks in advance,

Erik

Thumbs up

To connect the PC & laptop directly using ethernet cable you need a 4/5 crossover in the cable.

This is normally sorted out in the router or hub and you use cables with straight through connections.

Ask your local computer shop to make one for you or no doubt other suggestions will be put forward.

Default Wireless Router - Hub??

Hi

What router do you have? It may be able to serve as a hub aswell, which will mean that you don't need any cables and can setup a wireless LAN.

The crossover cable mentioned by elpmek is a simple option and will work OK as long as your IP addresses are in the same range. - If you're not sure how to do this post here for some more details or you could look over some of the threads/posts in the site were others have tried to do similar things, as we've given a few 'step by steps' before.

If the two computers are using MS XP and DHCP (default) with a common Workgroup name they will find each other.

Ensure you share apppropriate directories on each machine.

Think i've fixed the problem, and it wasn't very hard (could've thought about it earlier). My friend came by to play BFME2 over LAN, and I noticed that the LED's of my network card weren't working, so I thought by myself, let's install the drivers....when that was ready it all worked

Stupid me...

Thanks for your help anyway

Erik

Hi Erik!

Glad you fixed the problem, and posted the solution back, is this can become helpful to other users.
But you've been able to use the network connection although the drivers were not installed??

Marked as Resolved.

Bluefish

Well I was able to play games over the network with the drivers installed, but wasn't able to share files. Recently I reinstalled Windows (for my harddisk you know? :P), also installed the drivers, and now everything works fine. Must've been a Windows thing then.
