Default [Pending] modem to wireless

Basically, I live in a flat above a shop and we buy our internet connection directly from our landlord who also owns the shop. He has a BT broadband connection, and we have a standard network cable coming to the flat which we connected to a hub and ran to the various machines. Basically, what I want to know is if we can buy some sort of router or something to make our connection wireless, or would we need to convince landlord to replace his existing modem with a wireless one?

Thanks in advance,

Squizz

Default Wireless

Hi Squizz,

Welcome to The PCHF,
You might be able to set up your own wireless network with a router like the one here http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper
Don't forget that you will need wireless receivers in each pc that wants to connect wirelessly to the router, there is still the capacity for you to use cables with the router shown.
I think that in the long run you might be better off convincing the Landlord to upgrade to wireless and then you should only have to get the receivers for your own pc's, like this one http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satel...VisitorWrapper
Please bear in mind that I have only shown examples from one site, there are many more out there from different manufacturers.
Let us know what you decide

Default An access point like this one would work

http://shopper-zdnet.com.com/Linksys...-20796892.html

Linksys WAP54G

It plugs into one of your hub ports and basically just serves to replace/complete the (wired) connection from the port to the radio interface (in your PC) that Radar mentioned.

If you have a newer laptop that radio/receiver may already be present and integrated. If not, they are purchaseable with PCMCIA or USB interfaces.

If you want wireless to your desktop, you will probably want to choose a USB WLAN interface. If not ,you will need a PCI bus adapter (and hopefully an open PCI slot) and they usually accomodate a PCMCIA type radio/receiver.

Remember this when attaching an AP to a hub attached to a router: Your hub is splitting the bandwidth of ONE router port...i.e. you are sharing that one router port's thruput among all of the devices attached to any of the ports on your hub...

Radar's advice to convince your landlord to go with a wireless router is a good suggestion.

Since the landlord could also have access to your WLAN signal, maybe it would be to your mutual benefit to go half-sies on the cost and put the wireless function right at the source (where his router is now)...just a thought
