Default HELP!! my internet does not work when connected to my other computer!!

In my house there are two computers, a slow one downstairs and a fast(er) one upstairs for my use. My mum has bt broadband, unfortunately it is not wireless and we do not have a cable long enough to connect both computers to the internet at the same time. Consequently, if i want to use the internet in my room i have to move the router upstairs. All was fine until i retuned home from school today when i discovered that the the internet was playing up again, (this is a frequent occurence) when i attempt to accesthe internet i get the "cannot find server" page. Usually the connection wizard accesable through MSN messenger fixes the problem, failing that, reparing the connection usually works. Neither of these now work and im completely lost, when i run the connection wizard it tells me first theres something wrong with my proxy server and then that there is something wrong with my key ports. When i attempt to repair the connection i am told that clearing the DNS cache failed, i know for a fact that the router works because i am using it now on the slower computer, the telephone line in my room is also working properly. i am completly out of my depth here, someone please help!:computer_

Sorry for any spelling mistakes, the length of the post and if its in the wrong section, im new...

ok aj,

try this... you say your PC is using a router.. im assumng you're using DSL. take your DSL modem into your room and jack into ur computer without the router and see if your pc can find a connection. restart your pc when u connect and tell us if anything happens.

nothing happems, but i do think theres something seriously wrong with my computer... when i turned it on and logged in, the disk i happened to have in the cd drive began playing so i pressed the eject button, when i did this the computer immediately turned off, its happened before too. When i took out one of the router cables on the day i came back from school it turned off. And im not talking shut down, i mean just turned off as thought id pulled the plug out of the socket. Im no genius but that sounds like a short circuit to me...=S
