Default [Answered] HELP! Server issues -- not FIREWALL

Hi -- I am a new user (obviously) and while not technically illiterate, I certainally know very little about programming.

I have recently moved and obtained a new IP through local ISP (cox) -- ever since then -- after about one half hour of activity -- I get cannot connect to server (I use Firefox -- but happens on IE also).

I called tech support for ISP they walked me through a couple of things. Eventually we learned it is not the firewall (we checked all Norton firewall and windows is off), we even uninstalled and reinstalled Norton. BUT when I rest IP by ipconfig/release and then ipconfig/reset, I can then browse again for anywhere from between 20 minutes to one hour. The only thing I can think of is that I might need a new ethernet cord ---

I know that I might not be in the right place to ask this question, but I am going out of my mind and my kids are throwing a fit cause they cant play oinline and I would greatly appreciate any and all help.

Thank you all kindly!
Sarah

Hi Sarah, welcome to the PCHF!
I apologise for the lack of response and am aware that you might not ever read this post, i would however, like to try and give some helpful information.

This problem is most likely related to either the network cable - as you have suggested - your modem/router - or the DNS your ISP use, and they're not telling you the truth (which does happen )

They're all easy to test - first swap the network cable...easiest.
Then your DNS - ask the ISP for their dns and if it's already set, try 4.2.2.2 instead.
If this still causes a problem, then try updating the firmware on your modem/router. Or perhaps even getting a new one from your ISP just for testing purposes.

If you need any further information - please don't hesitate to contact me and i will help you out.
I realise that you may not read this post, but if you do...i hope this info helps either fix (or understand if it has already been fixed).

Marked as answered - for now.
