Default [FIXED] Network Card/Onboard LAN

Hey I'm about to start university, and I've suddenly realised that I'm not sure if my computer can connect to a network (since at uni I'll need to connect to their network to use the internet in my room).

Anyway I'm pretty sure I don't have a separate network card, although I do have an RJ45 socket on my PC which leads me to think I might have onboard LAN? I'm not too sure that's just what I was told. I've checked my device manager under network adapters and there are two: '1394 Adapter' and 'Microsoft Loopback Adapter'. Some techie friends of mine didn't seem very impressed, and after downloading various drivers and attempting to install them, unsuccessfully, they've come to the conclusion that it's broken.

I don't see how it could've broken by itself so I thought I'd come here to ask, since people here probably know more about it than my friends do.? :P

I'm not sure what you need to know, but I'm using Windows XP have 1gb approx RAM, 120gb HD, and my motherboard is a VIA K6-Delta.

Thanks

I would say you have assumed correctly. If theres is a rj45 socket then you should have onboard LAN.

the 1394 is firewire and not too sure what the loopback does but to use onboard LAN you need to do 2 things

1. enable it in bios
2. install the drivers which will be on the CD that came with your motherboard

Now, if everything goes smoothly, once you have enabled onboard LAN in bios, next time you enter XP, XP should automatically detect new hardware and the new hardware wizard should run.

give that a go ...

It's enabled in BIOS, and the motherboard didn't come with a CD... although I have a manual.

It came with a floppy disk, but it says SATA RAID which I don't think is the right thing... :-(

Actually I think it's okay.... there were onboard LAN drivers on the disk titled 'VIA SATA RAID Driver'... which my friends told me wasn't the right thing but i'm gonna restart and fingers crossed it will have worked!!
