Default [Answered]Network Issues

Hello all,

Recently (about an hour ago), I have been experiencing random pauses whenever i'm on the internet or playing online games. It get lag about every 6 seconds and lasts about 4 seconds. It's getting on my nerves. I posted this topic in the Network stuff section because I believe the problem is related to my router and/or cable modem. It really doesn't bother me when i'm using the internet, but when I'm playing online games its a SERIOUS ******.

I've ran scans with Microsoft Antispyware and AVG to see if it could be viruses.

MASW identified JAVA as a virus (?), I didn't really care for that, but I deleted it anyways.

AVG found 2 trojans
PSW.Sclog.D
PSW.Generic.U

which came from these hacks for something I was testing earlier. No, I am not a stubborn mule, I inspect what I download. I didn't run these programs, the viruses were found in the executables.

But, I think those are irrelevant to whats causing my problem. I thought that was a coincendence that my problem happened after I removed those two things.

My cable modem is a Motorola SB5100, and my router is a Linksys BEFW1154.that 5 might be an S but i'm to lazy to go in my other room and double check.

I Ctrl+Alt+Deleted and monitored the networking section. Whenever some page is loading up the Net Utilization drops to 0%, it picks up a few seconds later. But by now after reading this, you'd expect that.

This is happening on both of the computers on my network. They both are having the same problem. I really need help. If you can help me and you need more informations on my computer let me know.

If you found some nastie's on your pc I would post a hijackthis log.. See if there still there. You can download it below in my signature.. Save it to a permant folder like my documents.. Then click scan and save log. A log will pop up in a second or two and copy all of it and paste it in a reply.

I don't recognize anything bad on the list. I'm really starting to think this has to do with my router or cable modem. The cable modem has been acting flippy recently (it hasn't happened in a few days though). The 'SEND' light on it is blinking, meaning it is unable to send data. My router. I don't know. I mean. Theres only 2 computers on my network. Not much data is being transferred all over.

EDIT: Argh. The lag pauses are insane now. They are big and long.

I have exactly the same cable modem as you and I too have suffered at the hands of Mr Lag and Mr Pause. I find that the only way to clear these problems (and it's not permanent) is to re-boot the cable modem. I will be speaking to my ISP in the near future about a replacement cable modem, maybe you could do the same. Incidentally, your ISP can raise or lower the "gain" on your connection with attenuators that they attach to the cable line-in.
