Are you running on a domain?

You can change security settings on a shared folder, which enables you to allow only certain people access writes to the file. You can choose from no access / read only/ full access e.t.c

If this is what you are after I would be able to explain further.

Alright not sure if it is the same on XP home but worth having a look.

Browse to the folder you have shared and right click on it and go to properties:
Then go to security - and click on the advanced button.

You should get a list of people that currently have access, untick the box that says "Inherit from parent the permission entries that apply to child objects"

It should then prompt you with a security tab, click REMOVE.

Now there should be noone in the "permissions box".

So to add people simply click on Add, type in their network username and give them whatever permissions you think they should have.
