Default [Answered] Networking question

Ok, im having a custom PC built which wont have a modem in it. Now the PC that im using at the moment has an internal broadband modem. Do i need to buy a wireless router with a modem to make my custom built one acess the internet or do i just buy a normal wireless router and the internet is provided by the broadband internal modem on the one im using now?

I am still not overly familiar with routers but you should be able to buy a normal wireless router which will use your current internet connection.

The other way of doing it would be to put network cards into both machines and use "internet connection sharing" to share the connection to the new PC. The only downside of this is your original machine would need to be switched on in order for the other one to access internet.

What id want to do is be able to access the Internet without the original machine being switched on.

Then it sounds like you would need to buy a wireless router with a modem, because the other router would have to use your existing modem which will only work with your PC turned on.

I am sure other people would have some ideas.

I agree with you Zimbo, from the sounds of it he should have to buy an external router with modem in order to share the connection w/o having the other PC on. I cant think of any other ways personally, maybe someone else will.

why did you select 2 routers?? I think you should only need one as long as it has a built in modem...
