Any ram from a reputable manufacturer would be fine. Ram timings would be differnet when you purchase upgraded modules with descriptions like hyper/extreme etc. in the description but realistically you are not going to get a BIG performance bump using them. I'd use the mid-line version of a ram module version and not look back.

Corsair is the best type of RAM IMO

For the first build I would suggest this MOBO PLE Computers Perth, Online Shopping, Computers, Notebooks, Hardware, Service and Repairs

That is the MOBO I am using at home with the Core 2 duo 2.83 CPU and have had no problems with it since installing about 3 months ago

Not sure about the second build tho sorry

My vote = i5

RAM
Kingston 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz HyperX Memory Kit CL7 1.5V - Ebuyer

Great low cost motherboard
Asus P7P55D LE P55 Socket 1156 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard - Ebuyer

I too vote for the i5.

The RAM Callisto pointed out is what I'm talking about. It's Low Latency (CL7) and Low Voltage (1.5 volts). Some of the 'older' DDR3 RAM is designed to operate at or near 2.0 volts and it will present problems if installed on an i5 motherboard. Take my word for it. Additionally, the price difference between CL9 and CL7 RAM is close enough that not geting the faster RAM to compliment the speed of an i5 makes no sense. Any old RAM is just a waste of money. I'd also go with DDR3 1600.

If you were just looking to upgrade an existing Socket 775 system I'd definitely recommend a q9550. Since you're starting from scratch an i5 is the right way to go.
