The LED comes on but it won't open. In fact, when you push the open tray button the LED goes off. Push it again, and it comes back on.

Do you think getting a floppy drive and using start up disc would be the best way to go at this point. Keep in mind this is fresh build. I've got an XP disc but have never been able to install it because the dvd drive is not recognized (of course).

THANKS for taking time to help.

hehe, try the CD-ROM without the ribbon cable attached?

Also, what PSU do you have attached?

The PSU came with the case - it's an Ultra 600 watt. It came with several connector types with mulitple leads on some of them. Does it matter if I have more than one device connected to a single cable that has mulitple leads? For instance, right now I have the a 12volt adaptor cable plugged into a lead that's on the same cable I'm plugging my SATA power adaptor cable into. But I've also tried plugging straight in from the SATA power cable to the psu and it didn't work that way either.

The dvd drive is plugged straight into the psu though that particular cable has 2 othe leads - another standard 4 pin female molex type and a small four pin female type that I'm not sure what it's for (neither of the 2 extra leads on that cable are being used). The PSU just came with a bunch of different cables and I had to make due - maybe I should just buy some standard molex cables without all the extra leads?

I unplugged the IDE ribbon and this time the LED lit up and stayed on when I pushed the open tray button. However, a few seconds later the LED went off and then came back on w/o me pushing it again. Weird.

The smaller 4 pin is generally used for things like floppy drives and card readers.

Wait, I just hit me what you said in post #15. When you switch the PC on, the CD-ROM LED stays on constantly until you press the eject button?

yes, it stays on until I push the button. then it goes off and it either comes on when i push it again (or when i had the IDE ribbon disconnected it would come back on by itself)
