Default advice for working with hardware

I'd like some advice on working with hardware components, such as inserting and removing videocards, memory and such. How can I in an easy way, avoid static electricity to damage the components, and what other things to consider?

Before touching the components always touch the power supply. This will get rid of any static electricity your body is holding on to. Introducing potential static electricity could fry your components.

Also, just be methodical. Go very slow. Make sure everything is in its place, and then check again. There is no sense in throwing everything together in a rush to turn your pc on and then not having it turn on and needing to go back to square one

Well the power supply is stuck in some metal box, so is touching the metal part ok as well? Touching with both hands?

Yes. That's exactly what you need to do.
