Default Problematic network connections - failing mobo?

I have a problem in that I believe my network (pc not internet) connections are running slow sometimes - only noticed by the internet going slowly but also my router access page 192.168.2.1 is slow to load plus when this PC is struggling to access the web another via wireless seems fine. The fact I can't access the router home page sometimes or sometimes its just slow indicates something's up - right... (i.e. doesn't need any connection to the internet) This is the 2nd modem I've bought - now I think it's the PC and am wondering if the motherboard is packed up. Normally this PC uses a network cable to connect to the router but symptoms seem the same with a USB wireless adaptor.. Also I've had messages saying that there is a fault when I ask it to repair the network address (only sometimes though) for both the USB adaptor and network ports. Also how long should my PC take to find an IP address I guess it can be as long as 1-1.5 minutes is this unusual? Finally my PC shutdown when I was connecting a usb device and the last time a computer did that the motherboard was kaput due to dodgy chinese capacitors. My current set-up is an ABit NV8 socket 754 about 3 years old (ish) last of the socket 754's... I've checked all voltages... all look fine.. any ideas - i recently hoovered out inside the PC there was a lot of dust in there including some partially blocking the CPU heatsink (maybe 30-50% blocked), fixed now but symptoms remain.. Also could my PC not recognising my CD and DVD writers, as writers be related..

hey men8ifr,

I can see you have another thread open for your CD writer issues, so we will stick with your network problems for this thread.

I wouldn't have thought a failing motherboard would have caused slow network connection on both USB and Ethernet connections, but anything over 30 seconds to obtain an IP address isn't good. However, in reality, slow network connectivity could be caused by anything, anywhere between your router, PC hardware or most likely software.

If you receive any related error messages, these will be very handy. Slow connectivity is very often impossible to diagnose. Otherwise it's a case of ruling out one possibility at a time, starting with PCHF Prework on my signature.
