Hello,that is brilliant.
HDD can just fail.Some times they seem to last for ever some times a few months or they are dead whan you bought them.
It could of been damged due to a bad shut down or a power outage some time in the past.Hence drive became faulty and eventualy died.
There are a few things that can cause this issue,faulty mainboard,power supply.
Annoying for your drive to deveope a fault or die.But it is great your computer is up and running.

There are small printed-circuit controller boards in side the drives-- if there's no odd noises from a failed drive-- this board is often the culprit...
