Default PC is dead

Ok a couple months ago my pc stopped working, it was pretty old, like 7 or maybe even 8 years old. I pressed the power button and nothing happened at all, I opened up the case and the green power LED was on, on my motherboard but still nothing when I pressed the power button.

This coincided nicely with my dad getting a new pc and I got his old one which was only 18 months old. It worked fine for about a month and again, I was using on the friday night and switched it off fine and once I came back to it on monday morning I hit power and nothing! There is a card reader on the case and when I remove power cables and plug them back on the green power LED for the card reader comes on but when I hit power it just does nothing, I cant hear any fans start up or anything it just seems totally dead. Strange how the same problem has affected 2 pc's in such short space of time.

Does anyone has any tips on how to find out the source of this problem?
Thanks

The source of the problem could be some sort of Power Surge, dependant on what kit you've got plugged in locally, how many plugs of one socket, the general electricity supply in your area, lightning storms, etc.........

I have a double socket in the room. Off one socket the monitor was plugged into and off the other socket I had a multisocket which had my pc, router, speakers and external hard drive.

Since the problem occured I swapped the pc and the monitor around but still nothing but I fear the damage was probably already done.

Oh and I forgot to mention, certainly lightning storms are pretty few and far between in my area, 1 or 2 a year so I think this is very unlikely.

Also the first computer ran quite happily as it was for over a year and then just decided to pack in. Now the 2nd one has only last a few weeks, I'm willing to try anything to get it working again though.

Hey gazza if you had a power outtage or a faulty power supply can cause issues.

Try a diffrent fuse in plugs,or a diffrent cable.

Have you had any power outages or electricity went off when PC was switched on?

Nah, I've not had a power cut while living in this flat.

I borrowed a power cable from my pc at work, took it home and the same thing happened, plugged it in and the green light for the card reader came on but just totally nothing once I pressed the power button. Like I said I've already tried it in different sockets so I'm running out of idea's before I need to change the power supply. I just think it would be weird that the power supply is the problem since I get a green light on my card reader.

Gazz I would sugest at this moment in time to open her up and check all internal connections, make sure they are fully seated.

Do you hear any noise such as hard drive spin up?
