I've just recently moved cross country, which involved tossing my three old frankenstein pcs into the back of a moving van for the long haul. One of them had been hanging at startup pre-move, but was still working fairly well--the other was working fantastically, and the third we wont worry about.
When we arrived and I plugged everything in, neither pc would boot (oh no!!).
The first pc, which was already hanging at startup, started to freeze permanently at the manufacturer's screen, the one that offers you the press-delete-for-bios option. At this stage it either doesn't respond to my frantic delete key pressing, or takes me into BIOS (after a very long hang) and freezes there. When unplugged and plugged back in, however, it would start-but only once-and was very sluggish until it eventually crashed again. Afraid that repeatedly booting it like that might be hurting something, or worse that something may be dying and I may only have so many successful boots left, I decided to seek some advice before turning it on again
The second computer won't start at all-it doesn't offer me any beeps (not the lone happy beep nor the panic inducing multi-beep codes) or show anything on screen, but the fans run and the dvd drive will open (so I'll hazard it's not the power supply).
Thinking the parts may have been jostled, I tried taking both apart and putting them back together, piece by piece, from scratch (I grabbed an air can to get rid of the dust as well). I even re-seated the cpu with new goop. I still get the same result from both sassy machines.
Generally when something like this happens they give me a beep code (or at least a blue screen!) to deal with so I can take that online and figure it out from there...but in this case I'm at a total loss as to where I should begin. I turned to a friend and he uttered the dreaded words: "Your motherboard is dead in one and going in the other." Ayee!
Again, I'm very new at this, but if I'm going to use the stupid things as much as I do I definitely want to be able to learn how to fix them myself when I can, and what to do when I can't--so bear with me as I muddle through this
I tried searching several forums to see if I could find my answer without asking, but many solutions invoked a language I haven't learned yet. I guess it's time to communicate with people who know what they are doing directly! Thanks in advance for your time, guys
