Default Asus A8n-La issue

Recently my MSI (Amd socket 939) mobo on my custom built computer failed on me. After searching forever for a socket 939 mobo I found a Asus A8n-La Geforce 6150 LE at computergeeks.com. No where on the website was it stated this was a mobo specially built for HP/Compaq, which i recently found out as i was trying to troubleshoot. After installing the mobo and starting up the computer, Windows (xp Proff) goes thru the normal startup then just before it hits the Welcome/Logon screen, a blue screen (kinda like the BSOD) shows up then the computer restarts and goes through the whole windows startup process again, ending up on the blue screen again, in an endless cycle. Unfortunatly, the blue screen does not even show for a full second, so it is impossible to read. My question is whether the problem has to do with it being a Mobo designed for HP since im using OEM windows XP, or is it a pure windows issue. Any help can be appreciated.

Hello oneilsurfing.

Since you don't mention it I'm wondering if you are trying to run the system with the hard drive and operating system as it was before you changed the motherboard?

In cases where you change motherboards one often has to reinstall the operating system as too many things are different.

You'd be alright if you change to the exact same board but other than that problems would likely arise.

It shouldn't make any difference who the board was made for as I've installed XP Pro on HP computers quite successfully as well.

It would help if you could fill in the blanks a little bit as to what exactly you've done.

Yes, same HD/OS, i was hoping not to have to reinstall windows (because i don't have Docs backed up or many of my large game patches, which i would rather not re download, but i guess i have no choice). Now forgive me, since i built this comp, i have been out of the loop, is there a way to keep all the files from my old install, so i can transfer them over when i reinstall windows? Maybe create a second partition?

Though I'm not much of a fan of that procedure and prefer clean installs what you might attempt to do at this stage is a "repair install" of XP.

You might give this a read.. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...ps/doug92.mspx

If it works you won't suffer much in the form of ill effects.

It did work for me one time when I changed motherboards (I have an XP Pro disk though not OEM) then I put all my data in a safe place and reformatted just to give the system an opportunity to start afresh with the new motherboard.

I'm honestly not sure how the OEM figures into this or if it even does as I've never used such a disk myself.
