It is normal for some DVD players to play burned disks fine and others to have problems with the same burned disks. The only odd part is that your computer plays them for a bit then stops.
I don't think it's a memory problem cause you were able to play them through in VLC and you aren't experiencing other problems in the computer. Honestly it seems like your stand alone player is just more tolerant to errors on burned disks than the DVD player in your computer is.
That's why I was asking for you to try other disks to play. This is definitely a unique issue. But from the sounds of it, the Maxell disks may have burn errors on them or defects on the disk surface or maybe the video file itself had some problems or something. Maybe Windows Media Player gets to the errors/problems and then is like whoa and stops. Where VLC media player just plays through it. Same with your stand alone player.
When VLC media player started showing those lines and crazy stuff, was it around 20 minutes into the video? Maybe that's the point where WMP gave up.
Yet another thing to try is to burn a video to different disks from a different computer and see how they play. We have to determine if it's only experiencing the symptoms with just those Maxell disks, which is seems like may be the case.
You can also try streaming video on the internet that uses Windows Media Player. You'd have to find a video that's long enough. I can't think of a website that fits those requirements off the top of my head. Will have to do some searching.
If you do want to test your memory anyways, download Memtest from my link in my signature. It is a free memory diagnostic which you will create a bootable disk with. When you boot to the disk, it will start the diagnostics automatically. Let it go for 3 passes. If you get red lines during the diags, then you have errors in memory.
Hope that helps!

I didn't want to reply in your new thread in case other people may have ideas. You can continue posting in the old one as well.
I don't think it's your disks or your DVD player. I have a feeling it's software related. But may be hard to narrow down. Trying VLC media player with completely different disks will get us a bit closer.

Sorry I couldnt reply last nite..troubles with site, I guess..? Anyway, yes, I think ur right...I was able to download VLC player, and it plays discs all the way thru. (See my post in DVD forum.) Still not quite there tho it seems...not smooth, have lot of momentary hangs, some horizontal lines and wiggles. But yes, I think its my software too, or memory probs. It acts a lot like some of the old buffering delays I saw when recording video to HD via ATI "record TV" feature. Havent seen that lately, but never record any lengthy stuff, maybe why.
Anyway...Progress! heh...appreciate ur help, havent gotten any other replies since orig. post.
Dont have a store bought movie yet...but these Maxell discs play fine on my stand alone Toshiba recorder and a friends laptop w/DVD drive...trouble seems confined to my puter, whether it be software or the DVD drive...dunno.
Ill try to pick up a movie disc when I get to store, tho.
BTW, I have several media player programs on my machine, (tho I dumped Realplayer last nite). Could there be conficts with too many codecs or something? Add/Remove programs lists DivX codecs and "Creative DVD Audio plugin for Audigy Series"..whatever that is, Move Networks media player for Int. Explorer, Win DVD 4 and 6 (trial, probly expired)...Viewpoint media player, Windows Media player 11, and now VLC player. Should I dump some more of these?
Ok...hope this helps sort it out..thx again..Rich
