Exclamation Quad Core compatability issues on fresh build

Just built a new set up with the following;

Corsair 4GB Kit (2x2GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz) Socket 775 L2 8MB Cache
Seagate ST3100340AS 1TB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM
Optiarc AD-7200S 20X DVD±RW/DL/RAM Internal SATA Bare Black Drive - OEM
Antec TruePower Quattro 850W Modular PSU - 2x 8pin PCI-E 2x 6pin PCI-E 4x 12V Rails
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit
XFX 9800 GX2 Dual GPU 1GB DDR3 Dual DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Music - VISTA Certified
Asus P5N32-E SLI Socket 775 Nforce 680i SLI FSB1333

On first boot, BIOS read that I had a Quad core 1.8Ghz instead of the 2.4, Noted this is as an issue I decided to follow on with a Vista install, thinking that I could update the set up etc and all will be fine

Vista picks up the Processor fine (as 2.4) as well as the 4Gb of RAM and the SATA drives.

Issue is upon installing/moving large files, the processor builds up rapidly and then the system freezes, I can't do anything but restart which sometimes will not boot back into Vista and will attempt once more after a reboot. I left task manager open once and it showed the system idle process as taking up between 98-99% of CPU activity, whilst the graphs showed barely 0-1% activity?

I'm thinking either;
Motherboard is broken/uncompatable with the processor
Processor is damaged in some way

I managed to install the the chipset drivers which came on the CD with the MOBO (x86) and attempted to install the ones found on the website, this however led to a blue screen crash. The first drivers installed improved the problem and i was able to move files over 1Gb from a USB HDD easily (before it crashed a third of the way through)

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I am tempted to send back the Motherboard and find a replacement which is more up to date? It's 64bit ready, and comes with Vista drivers but doesn't advertise it as 'Vista Ready' anywhere.

It also says it's 'Quad Core' ready, but i'm starting to doubt this,

Any other infomation needed I'll get back to you ASAP

Thanks in advance for any help I receive, would love to get it off the ground as it'll be a beast when fully operating

Hello I am just reading your specs on OC UK.It appears it is quad ready and Vista.Did you stick some thermal paste on that CPU?

Ok how long has Vista been installed before it started freezing?
This is Vista myne used to get stuck at 100% oops and still does.
Has it always froze?
Have you installed all drivers that came with your MB?
Do you have antivirus installed and wich are they?
Have you downloaded anything of late or maybe installed a programm that may of caused this?
I think she would not boot up if the CPU was not correct.
Check your BIOS settings?Set them all back to default for now.

Have you updated BIOS?

Maybe up your speed on RAM a little?

In answer to the above;

Fresh build/install so within half an hour, it's just installing drivers/basic applications and it should get stuck on these basic operations
As above, installed drivers which came, got a blue screen when trying some chipset drivers from ASUS site
This is a hardware issue, virus definately is nothing to do with it
Downloads have been windows update/drivers from official sources

In terms of the not booting, i agree i don't see why it was able to, however it definately did report that it thought the processor was 1.8Ghz not 2.4? So maybe the motherboard is fine and the processor is a few cores short of a quintuplet?

Reset the BIOS and defaulted back to what came with it, only thing have changed was the onboard clock, overclock settings are set to standard (ie off). I didn't want to start flashing the BIOS until i could identify the problem. The board is 'up to date' and as far as I'm concerned if i have to update the BIOS to fix a basic problem such as this, it's not my fault and it can be returned to the vendor.

[EDIT] And thermal paste was stuck on the bottom of the CPU fan (which is the one which came in the Intel box), it should be working fine

Would also like to point out, that my first post was done off the PC itself, it's completely useable it just dies on any taks which needs processor power. I can't understand what the problem is

Using the PC right now, set to standard no overclocking at all

Gone to eventy viewer, must confess i don't know how to make a minidump
There are a couple of errors highlighted, if you can point me to a walkthrough i'll stick it up as soon as i can.

Didn't get a code from the blue screen as the PC restarted a few seconds after it appeared, hasn't been seen since (the drivers on the site were labelled as betas however)

An example from one of the errors was like this;

"Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Logitech\SetPoint\SetPoint.exe". Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC80.MFC,processorArchitecture="amd64",p ublicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b",type="win32",vers ion="8.0.50608.0" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis."

If that helps at all?

In that case, i was attempting to install 'SetPoint' from logitech, It froze halfway through and i couldn't do anything, acted like it was over processed as it just juddered to a halt (mouse movements etc). Nothing i could do but restart it.

The Logitech I would not use the disk I would download or use vista to search for the driver.

However I have Vista Ultimate 64 bit and I have terrible problems with my mouse I think the drivers for Vista on some products are a little dodgey,I do find when this mouse goes strange I update drivers or reboot.I have found no solution to Vista 64 bit and Logitech drivers for there mouse and keyboards.My keyboard is constantly playing up and again update drivers or reboot.I do not use the disk as this causes even more troubles.

I am thinking some of this problem is driver issues.

I would also test your RAM as in 1 stick at a time and reboot see how that goes.

Did you install SP1 for vista 64 bit?
