Hello, im currently trying to stick a p4 into a socket 478 motherboard, the problem is that i dont know how to get the heatsink and fan off. I have pulled the levers loose but it will not come free, what do i need to do? Thanks
press the levers back in place and run the pc for a while. Whats happened is the heat sink paste has hardened between the Heatsink and Fan and the CPU . You will have to be very very careful as the cpu could come out with the Heatsink and Fan causing damage to the processor or the socket
I changed the heatsink on my P4 yesterday and it came straight off! One thing i have heard is using a hair dryer to heat it up, obviously this has its risks and its up to you if its something you wanna try, i dont think id do it lol
This isnt good news.I would try very carefully to prise it apart using a small flat ended screwdriver. You could have already broke it but fingers crossed

Probably has a cheap thermal compound in there.
This is why I always recommend Arctic Silver....

Probably cheap thermal paste-- or even a pad
This is why I always stress using Arctic Silver-- or an equivalent high grade thermal compound.
its all good, the heatsink wasnt stuck, it was the clips that hold the fan housing on the top - didnt know about them as they were not adressed in "how to" videos i watched. The pc wasnt starting up because it was not connected to the wall socket, so many wires i thaught it was connected. anyway thanks for the assistance
