Exclamation Newbie: problems with MOBO/BIOS freezes

Well, I am in the process of building a computer from scratch with brand new components. The other day when I finally finished I realized that I was having some issues. When I turn on the machine, the computer beeps and then freezes at the BIOS screen. I have an EVGA nForce 680i SE SLI TR MOBO. It does the same thing everytime. Also, the LED reads a "55" for a post code. I eventually had the "firedog" people come over and they tested everything and told me that the motherboard was faulty/bugged, but may just need to be flashed/updated. So what other options do I have? How do I update the BIOS?

Hello YourLocalCanuck, welcome to PCHF.

A flash of the BIOS would be your only option, but only if the option is made available at the boot screen. Most motherboards require the post to complete before you would then boot to a floppy disk and then flash the BIOS from there. Since you are unable to complete a post, then your only hope for this option to be made available at the post screen (unlikely).

What is the model number of your board? I have a list of post error codes for EVGA motherboard but 55 is not listed. These are also listed at the back of your motherboard manual.

I checked the manual and it says "detect cpu speed and display cpu vendor specific version string and turn on all necessary cpu features."

Oh, I got that one a 6B for some reason. What CPU are you running Canuck?

Also, do you see the Flash option at the BIOS screen, will look something like:

^ ALT+F2 to enter AWDFLASH

Did these problems occur suddenly, or am I right by guessing that this has been a problem since the PC was built?

Finally, what is the model number of your motherboard?
